Multi-tasking is not very productive. I accomplish more and do a far better job just focusing on one task at a time.
I used to brag on what a great multi-tasker I was. I could cook dinner, talk on the phone, and feed the baby at the same time! But, was I really giving “all of me” to any of those areas?
No, I was giving “part” of my attention to each area. I was not engaged with my baby and really interacting. I was not fully engaged in the conversation I was having on the phone, I was distracted. Dinner was hopefully going to be good and not burned!
While I realize there are times that the above scenario must happened, I have decided that I want multi-tasking to be the exception and not the rule.
In working my Rule of 5 I realized that could accomplish them more quickly and do a better job by just blocking some time, and completely focusing on that task at hand.
If I am making phone calls, I become easily distracted when I am checking email in-between calls; two hours later, I realize I am working on other things than the phone calls I started.
Have you ever been on a call where you can tell the person is not giving their full attention? Most likely they are multi-tasking and answering email while they talk to you. Do you feel that distraction? Why not be fully engaged!
Instead of giving half your attention, schedule tasks when you are able to devote all of yourself to what you are doing.
Another thing I discovered about multi-tasking is that at the end of the day I end up with several things started and nothing finished. UGH! This creates frustration and being overwhelmed.
So, here’s to focusing on one thing at a time, finishing, and then moving to the next thing.
