Build it and They Will Come

by Ann Vertel on July 2, 2009

build it and they will comeIn 1848, an engineer by the name of Karl von Ghega, began construction of an Austrian railway line that linked Vienna with Austria’s possessions in the south. von Ghega’s greatest challenge in building the line was crossing the high Alps in a 26 mile section called Semmering Pass.

von Ghega had to do all the surveying from the ground, through mountainous crags, and from heavily wooded slopes. He had to develop new ways to cope with with such mountainous terrain and, in doing so, developed viaducts that would work on both curves and gradients at the same time. The Semmering Pass line took 6 years and over 20,000 men to complete.

But that is not the amazing part of the story.

During the time that the Semmering Pass railroad was being constructed, there was no locomotive in existence that was capable of traveling over the pass!

But because they were building the railway, steam locomotive engineers were motivated to design and develop engines that would meet the arduous requirements of the Semmering Pass. By the time the railway was completed in 1854, a new locomotive steam engine had been built to meet the need!

If you’ve seen the Kevin Costner movie “Field of Dreams,” you have heard the saying, “If you build it, they will come.”

Set goals that couldn’t possibly be met by the size of your current direct sales team.
Build the team you want without knowing where your team members will come from.
Put a team management system in place that will support the team you expect to have a year from now and let your team grow into that system.

In short, step out in faith and build your own Semmering Pass with no engines to run on it. They will show up, simply because you are building the rails for them to run on.

Karl von Ghega built something that hadn’t existed before, something that required stretching into new ideas by thousands of engineers, and in doing so, changed the history and the destiny of the locomotive design industry forever.

Whose destiny is in your hands today? Build it and they will come.
