For years I drove my family and friends nuts with my ability to organize, plan, juggle, host family gatherings and holiday plans, while at the same time I was attending college, (carrying 15 hours,) President of Phi Theta Kappa, taking care of three children, my husband, and my house! I was also commuting 50 miles in order to go to school and doing bookkeeping for our family business and still taking my children to ballet and taekwondo lessons. I am not sure why they thought this was a curse and not a skill!
Needless to say I was busy — probably a bit crazy too!
How did I do it all? Planning and scheduling on my color coded calendar — this was my lifeline and EXTREME self-care!
I got up every morning and exercised, showered, dressed, and was ready for my day to begin before anyone else was up. This was my time and by taking care of me first, allowed me to completely focus on getting everyone else’s needs taken care of and getting everyone where they needed to be for the day.
The key was I always took care of my needs first and THEN I was ready to “serve” everyone else’s. Was this difficult? Sometimes, but it was the only way for it to work. It happened smoothly because of self-care, systems, organization, self-discipline, and consistency.
What transpired a few years later is that I decided to start my own business and homeschool my children..piece of cake after doing all the above for 4 years, right? Well, NO.
My family had given me such a hard time about how everything had to be organized and scheduled that it was driving them nuts and stressing them out! I wasn’t stressed as I had everything under control, but I started accommodating their needs before my own which resulted in my being stressed, overwhelmed, and unorganized.
What I find amusing is now that my children are older and on their own, my daughter has told me “you know mom, we gave you such a hard time, yet I am finding that having a plan and schedule, as well as being organized is the only way I get things done.”
The lesson is that everyone works differently and you need to respect what works for you, may not work for others.
For me to be productive, efficient, and effective, I need to plan and organize…and this is Doing it My Way!
